lake turkana

As the helicopter rose over a ridge, I caught my first glimpse of Lake Turkana, a breathtaking sky-blue crescent in the desert of northern Kenya. Nomadic fishermen still make camp on spits of land that reach into its alkaline waters, which fill a basin formed more than 4 million years ago. Brightly colored mineral pools dot the shores of the lake. Little volcanoes poke through its reflective surface, including one, known as Central Island, that is still active. A smaller lake inside the crater is home to thousands of flamingos.

laughing zebra2

There’s always that one friend who always looks awkward in group photos.

If you happen to look around your friend group and figure out that someone is actually you, this zebra knows how you feel.

While taking pictures of zebras grazing in a safari park in Kenya, in Africa, Lincoln Harris, a tourist from Pennsylvania, caught one particular zebra who started to “laugh” and make awkward faces as he snapped photos.

wildbeest migration

Often hailed as one of the wonders of the natural world, Africa's great wildebeest migration is an incredible event to witness. Every year, more than 1.4 million wildebeest — along with gazelles and zebra — stampede Lion King-style across the veldt of southern Africa. When dry, cool August descends upon the Serengeti in Tanzania, the wildebeest begin their astounding journey north, following the rains to the Masai Mara in Kenya. In a single year, these massive herds can migrate nearly 1,000 miles during the largest mammal migration on Earth.

If witnessing this incredible journey is on your bucket list, here's everything you need to know about seeing the Great Migration
